Ian heard the distress in Mr. Thompson’s voice from the yard. He bolted toward the backdoor and into the kitchen in time to see a confused-looking man standing in the kitchen. The alarm guy?

“Dad, I told you about Todd coming here this morning to install an alarm system,” Daphne was explaining. The Dobermans started barking and a startled Henry came running into the room no doubt in search of his mother. Waking up in a strange place probably had him confused as well.

“What? Why?” Mr. Thompson dropped the plate in his hand, and it went tumbling to the floor.

“I got this,” Ian said, moving quick to grab cleaning supplies. Thankfully, the plates weren’t the breakable kind, or there would be twice the mess. He took a knee as Daphne tried to calm her dad.

“It’s all good, Dad,” she soothed as Henry wrapped his arms around her waist. He buried his face in her side.

Todd backed up against the wall as the Dobermans locked onto him. Daphne issued a command in what sounded like German, and they sat down on the spot. Good dogs. Ian hoped he could be worked into their training for when Henry came to the ranch. The dogs wouldn’t do well without Henry, and Ian figured the feeling would be mutual. They, along with Daphne, were the only constants in Henry’s life.

“Sorry,” Daphne said to Todd. “Would you be able to work in another room until we’re able to clear the kitchen?”

“Yes, ma’am,” Todd stated. His gaze flew to the dogs. “Will they let me do my job?”

“I’m about to take them outside,” Daphne stated, walking Henry toward the table.

“Hey, Mr. Thompson. Mind if I have a cup of coffee?” Ian asked. He could get it himself, but Mr. Thompson would volunteer to pour it and that would give him something to do.

“I’ll get it for you,” Daphne’s dad said. He turned around and grabbed a mug from the cabinet like chaos hadn’t just happened.

Daphne flashed eyes at Ian and mouthed the words thank you. She walked the Dobermans to the back door and then took them outside with Henry clinging for dear life to her waist. She managed to put out bowls of food and water while Henry kept his spindly arms wrapped around her.

The mess didn’t take long to clean. By the time Mr. Thompson turned around, Ian was dumping the bacon and eggs in the trash. He grabbed and wetted a couple of paper towels so he could wipe the floor.

“Here you go,” Mr. Thompson said, handing over a mug the second Ian was finished.

“Thank you,” Ian said, realizing the uphill climb Daphne was going to have in taking care of her father, her son, and trying to keep safe from the bastard who had her on the run these past two years.

“Do you have time to stay for a bit?” Mr. Thompson asked, not seeming to realize Ian had been there since the night before.

“If it’s all right with you, I’d like to stay on here for a few days.
